YELLOW RED HOT POKER; Kniphofia (South Africa)

    • Appearance: Features egg-shaped or thistle-like white to silver flower heads framed by spiky silvery or pewter-colored bracts.
    • Height & Spread: Grows about 2 to 3 feet tall (24–46 inches) and spreads roughly 1 to 2 feet wide.
    • Bloom Time: Flowers from early to late summer (typically June through September).
    • Uses: Ideal for fresh-cut or dried flower arrangements, sunny borders, and gravel or cottage gardens.
    • Wildlife Value: Attracts bees, butterflies, and other beneficial pollinators.

    Growing Conditions

    • Light: Requires full sun for the best growth and color.
    • Soil: Prefers sharp-draining, poor, sandy, or loamy soil; soggy or overly rich winter soil can rot the roots.
    • Hardiness: Generally hardy in USDA Zones 3 through 8 (depending on the specific cultivar).
    • Maintenance: Drought-tolerant once established, salt-tolerant, and deer-resistant. Avoid frequent root division since sea holly is slow to re-establish.
