AGAVE CREAM SPIKE: Agave Applanata

    • Appearance: Forms a tight, artichoke-like rosette of wide, short, blue-green to olive leaves edged with creamy-white margins.
    • Spines: Features sharp reddish-brown or dark brown lateral teeth and a prominent dark terminal spine.
    • Size: Grows slowly to a mature height of about 10 to 15 inches (25–40 cm) and a width of 12 to 24 inches (30–60 cm).
    • Offsets: Produces basal pups (offsets) around the base, especially when younger.
    • Flowering: Monocarpic (dies after blooming), eventually producing a tall flower stalk with yellow-to-orange flowers after 20 or more years.

    Care Guidelines

    • Light: Requires full sun to partial shade (at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily is ideal).
    • Soil: Needs a porous, gritty, and very well-draining cactus and succulent soil mix.
    • Watering: Prefers low water use; follow a "soak and dry" method, allowing the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Keep nearly dry during winter.
    • Hardiness: Hardy in USDA zones 8b through 11 (surviving down to roughly 15°F to 20°F / -7°C to -8°C), and makes an excellent container or patio plant.
