- Appearance: Forms dense, rounded rosettes or spherical balls of countless narrow, rigid, deep green or gray-green spiky leaves featuring sharp terminal tips.
- Size: Typically matures to about 20 inches (50 cm) tall and wide, though large clumping clusters can spread wider over time.
- Flowers: Produces tall, erect spikes (racemes) in spring or summer bearing tubular, reddish-purple to yellow flowers.
- Hardiness: Best suited for USDA hardiness zones 8–11; it can handle brief, moderate frost or temperatures down to about 25°F (-4°C) if kept dry.
Essential Care Guide
- Light: Requires 6 or more hours of direct sunlight daily, though it tolerates light partial shade.
- Soil: Needs a fast-draining, porous succulent or cactus mix to prevent moisture buildup.
- Watering: Water deeply only when the soil is completely dry. Reduce watering significantly during winter, giving it just an occasional drink every month or two.
- Propagation: Easily propagated by removing basal offsets (pups) that form around the parent plant during spring or summer.
